Food Policy and the Future

The Consortium for Women and Research at UC Davis continues its series...

Is a better world possible?

How Gender, Race, and Poverty Shape Food Policy, and How Food Policy is
Shaping Our Future

3201 Hart Hall
UC Davis
Wednesday, May 16, 2007, 4-5:30 p.m

MRC Greenwood,
Chancellor Emerita, UC Santa Cruz,
Professor of Nutrition and Internal Medicine, UC Davis

Marilyn Townsend, Ph.D.
Cooperative Extension Specialist, Nutrition, UC Davis

These talks will explore the amazing paradox of the fact that food
insecurity is tied to an "obesity epidemic" that is rapidly becoming the
number one public health issue in the country. Failure to understand this
paradox will lead to skyrocketing health care costs, social stigma that
compounds racial and gender inequalities, and economic costs that are likely
to be to be felt most by poorer women and their children.

Are our national programs and policies working toward best outcomes or are
they part of the problem? The speakers will explore this question and will
suggest strategies for future action.
